Kiddies beware though; this isn’t the type of Halloween where you go trick-or-treating. Coupled with “Zombies”, “Riot” is the type of Halloween where brains get eaten and baaaaad things happen. Designer Drugs is on tour now; go see him. It’s sure to be a freaky experience, in a good way.

For me, The Flaming Lips was just one of those bands that I had to accept as “good,” but not my kind of good. You might feel similarly about Radiohead or Animal Collective, or maybe you like all three bands and have no friends. However, for whatever reason, I really really like this new album. It just pushes my buttons this time around. If you’ve suffered a similar resistance to the band, give them another chance and check out Embryonic.

Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a new pop princess in town. After a year of Little Boots and La Roux being hailed as wonderfully delightful female artists with a electronic twist, it’s time for something new. Ellie Goulding, produced by the delightful Starsmith, has been buzzed about ever since her superior-to-the-original cover of Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold”. Here’s “Guns + Horses” which should be on her upcoming album out sometime soon.

For the latter group, it’s not necessarily their fault: the music industry is so obsessed with getting more and more fresh material to listen to, it’s a wonder how any record is listened to more than once nowadays. The result of this obsession is a graveyard of under-appreciated masterpieces. Do your ears a favor and forget the Pitchfork reviews tonight. It’s time to go dig up some graves.

I can shamelessly recite the words and declare the impetus of each and every single LCD Soundsystem track and effectively alienate anyone who couldn’t give a shit (basically everyone). I almost wept in joy when Murphy announced that he’s working on his new record, and again when I saw that his first release since the announcement was a cover of a track by one of his biggest influences, Alan Vega of Suicide.

When we have everything in life, we sing about it. When we have nothing in life, we sing about it. As an essential facet of human culture, music comes in spite of the weather, or perhaps more accurately, due to the weather. Vampire Weekend has seen sunny skies after their small-scale pebble of a debut caused monsoons in the music industry. Next January, they try to replicate their success with differing emotional arrangements.

The Boy Least Likely To takes one of my all time favourite activities and turns it into more than that. Not only does he catch butterflies, which I have yet to fully master, he boxes them up. What they are boxed up for I can not say but I’m sure I would know if I could catch butterflies. After the sense of failure that is inherent with the attempts to catch butterflies this track provides a nice way to relax and wonder what actually happens once they get boxed up.

The Black Keys want to take you on a journey to a distant land of fantasy. Here the Blues-rockers take the irresistibly dour oil of their heavy guitars and relentless percussion and mix it with the watery soul of hip hop and some of its most talented poets. Normally, one wouldn’t expect much, but in this brave new world, the two behave as if they are more than made for each other; they are both of the same entity, and that is music. Out on November 27.

Grime is exactly what it sounds like, which is probably why I love it so much. The MCs’ voices skip along at velocities that embarrass F-22 bombers, the music is dirty and primitive, and the lyrics require scrutiny and attention comparable to that which is required of a college textbook. The experience is an exotic and entertaining one, and one that can be easily revisited a hundred times over.

Progression is a funny thing, and in the hands of a band that can be described as “mainstream prog,” confusion can arise. Muse has had some creative glitches and commercial duds both, and although they never disappoint their audience, they seem to always want to perfect their sound. In The Resistance, they continue on this quest for refinement, and I can’t say I don’t like the incredibly commercial result, but I also can’t say the symphonic arrangements don’t come off as awkward.

But watch out because we all want to see you fall. After all, you’re just one of us. MuteMath wants to hear what you have to say with their hit off of their new CD.

There are few anatomical phenomena that are as satisfying as clearing your throat of all the nasty phlegm in the nasal cavity and spitting it into the sizzling pavement. Although horrific, you still feel infinitely cleaner than before, like some sort of nasal baptism. I have found that complex and sensible dub-step does the same for the human soul. It spits out the stresses and problems of your day-to-day life and invites you to stare at their sizzling corpses in bliss, but it reserves the nasty grunge for its own pleasure.

Mediocrity is condemned to be subject to the fickle bitch of context. Sometimes it’s suitable for the moment, and at other times it is incredibly disappointing. This is evident in Arctic Monkeys’ records. Some hazy cloud drifts over their redundant melodies and brutally removes their songs from emotion. However, much like Franz Ferdinand’s own comeback, Humbug’s appearance in stores today appears to break that curse. But of course, it may just be that fickle bitch playing with perception once again.

So, Earlimart. I’m sort of backpedaling here, so excuse me. Hymn and Her has already made its way into the hearts of so many self-involved bloggers before me, and more importantly, into their obscure lists of top albums of a selected year. Admittedly, I never sat down and really listened to it. I have a feeling that those list-bloggers didn’t either. Do yourself a favor and kill forty minutes of your time with it. It’ll open your eyes.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 80s are making a comeback. And La Roux, a synthpop duo from Britain, is one of the hottest breakout artists from the year of 2009. Singer Elly Jackson’s voice is reminicent of 80s pop icons Pat Benetar and Madonna, while Ben Langmaid provides the hot beats to back it up, reminding us of the 80s but still bringing in a fresh 21st century perspective to these tracks. La Roux is definitely worth a listen.

You might have already heard of The White Lies. They’ve already been popular in Europe, but the release of their 2009 album To Lose My Life… has given them a small but growing fanbase here in America. They’re a little bit heavier than what I listen to, but I was snared by their swinging vocals and guitar hooks. Their gloom-rock sound will carry them a long way.

Much like a resurrected trend from the seventies, the meshed-together elements of Island, IS evoke a dreamy nostalgia of memories nonexistent, and with this, they hit home with something clever and beautiful. Of course, that familiarity is not ill-fit: Volcano Choir’s sound is a collaboration between Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and alumni from Collection of Colonies of Bees. The album, Unmap, is to be released on September 22nd.
